Pence: U.S. Won't Budge to Avoid Cold War With China

US Vice President Mike Pence Warns Beijing To Change Its Behavior

"[Navarro] was not speaking for the president nor was he speaking for the administration".

In an interview with Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin in which Pence focused on the White House's Indo-Pacific policy, the vice president said his trip to the region "is meant to show the United States has no intention of ceding influence or control" to Beijing. "We are here to stay".

Washington expects Beijing to undertake a dramatic change in all of its policies to accommodate United States demands and is prepared for prolonged hostilities if it does not, Vice President Mike Pence reportedly said.

"I think Peter very badly misspoke".

Pence said the USA is "in a strong position" for a potential escalation of the trade war it has already unleashed on China. "We're looking for a change of posture".

This picture taken on November 6 shows a Chinese and US flag at a booth during the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.

The new congressional report was released shortly after Vice-President Mike Pence threatened Beijing with a "cold war scenario" unless Beijing was "willing to make massive changes" in "its economic, military and political activities". He first moved to add the additional levies to $50 billion of China's imports this summer, to which Beijing responded in a tit-for-tat manner, placing new taxes on an equal amount of USA products.

The US wants China to offer concessions on a wide range of grievances, from intellectual property protection to territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The president has frequently criticized China for treating the U.S.

Washington has been ramping up pressure on Beijing in recent years, imposing tariffs on Chinese goods and lately accusing China of interfering in USA domestic politics.

The commission also claims that China is using its road, highway, bridge, and port investments not only to "encourage and validate authoritarian actors abroad", but of exporting technology standards which may threaten USA companies' market access.

Beyond trade, the Trump administration has warned repeatedly about China's alleged efforts to meddle in US and global affairs.

"He was not speaking for the president, nor was he speaking for the administration", Mr Kudlow told CNBC. China has accused Trump and his administration of having a "cold war mentality" toward Beijing.
