Raging infernos spread on both ends of California, killing 9 people

The fires including this blaze near Malibu Lake in Malibu California have forced mass evacuations including two-thirds of the city of Malibu itself

Firefighters used the lull to try to rein in the powerful blaze that had grown to 109 square miles (282 square kilometers) and get a grasp of how much damage it did in its first two days.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of looting Friday, Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow said during a press conference Saturday morning.

The mayor of Paradise said that only 10 to 20 percent of homes in the town were left standing. About 35 people have been reported missing, authorities said. Reportedly, at least nine people in a mountain town.

The remains of five of the victims in Northern California were discovered in or near burned out cars, three outside residences and one inside a home, Honea also said.

On Thursday night, the Hill Fire posed an immediate threat to Ventura County residents, including those in Thousand Oaks, where the mass shooting in Borderline Bar & Grill that killed 12 occurred just the night before. He blamed the fires - still burning in both Northern and Souther California - on "gross mismanagement of the forests". Acting Governor Gavin Newsom called a state of emergency in Butte County.

About 3,500 people were under mandatory evacuation, Spelman said.

The show's producers said in a statement Saturday that, with the area closed to traffic, they didn't know the condition of what is primarily a private residence. At least six people were killed, five of them in their vehicles, as they sought to escape the fire.

"Thousands of others have lost homes and pets and precious belongings". Authorities estimated that more than 6,000 structures were destroyed.

In addition to homes destroyed, Paramount Ranch's "Western Town", a landmark film location dating back to 1927 that included a jail, hotel and saloon, burned to the ground. His later tweets were more measured, saying that "our hearts are with those fighting the fires". They were backed up by helicopters and water tankers. Perhaps he could also explain how the state is responsible for the Santa Ana winds and the continued dry conditions fueling the fires?

The resort is one of the most in-demand locations in California for Hollywood stars seeking privacy and luxury, and has been home to Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt and a host of other celebrities.

Three-quarters of the city of 130,000 was under evacuation orders, Thousand Oaks mayor Andy Fox said. Some have already been assigned to a massive wildfire in Southern California.
