Samsung releases premium mobile AP Exynos 9 Series

The Samsung Galaxy S9

This succeeds the current Exynos 9810 chip that's powering the Galaxy S9 and Note9 series.

Although Samsung has always been talking about its Exynos mobile application processor (AP), a.k.a. mobile processor, even before Huawei started singing praises of its own Kirin chip, the Korean manufacturer has somewhat been silent on at least one new trend in that market.

Samsung unveiled its newest flagship mobile chip, the Exynos 9820, today.

That's right, the 9820 still integrates a good old fashioned LTE modem (an LTE-Advanced Pro with LTE Category 20 support, to be exact), while the CPU architecture has been revised to include three clusters instead of two.

Two "custom" 4th generation cores will handle "ultimate processing power", a Cortex-A75 pair is in charge of "optimizing" performance, with four frugal Cortex-A55s guaranteeing "greater efficiency" for "superior" overall performance "that lasts". The Exynos 9820 is an intelligent powerhouse with a separate hardware AI-accelerator, or NPU, which performs AI tasks around seven times faster than the predecessor.

For gaming, the new Samsung chip uses a Mali-G76 MP12 GPU. The neural processing unit will allow for more powerful augmented reality and virtual reality experiences on the device. It promises to offer up to 40% better performance and 35% better power efficiency compared to the Mali-G72 MP18 GPU on the current Exynos 9810. At 2.0Gbps downlink speed, an FHD high-definition movie (3.7GB) can be downloaded in about 15 seconds. The modem supports 4x4 Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO), 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), and Enhanced Licensed-Assisted Access (eLAA) technology. The chipset also enables 4K video recording at 150fps and 10-bit colors, as well as the ability to shoot 8K video at 30fps.

In short, the Samsung Exynos 9 Series 9820 is clearly being positioned for Samsung's next wave of premium smartphones next year. One of the most notable features Samsung has added to the Exynos 9820 is a dedicated NPU.
