Trump weighs removing chief of staff, DHS boss

U.S. President Donald Trump is under pressure from his wife to fire his deputy national security adviser over what two sources close to the White House said was the way Melania Trump's trip to Africa was handled.

First lady Melania Trump's office said she wants Mira Ricardel, the deputy national security adviser, ousted from the White House.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Deputy Chief of Staff Kirstjen Nielsen speak together as they walk across the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017.

Trump has not decided on a candidate to replace Nielsen, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Earlier Tuesday, Ricardel participated in a celebration at the White House celebrating the Indian Diwali festival where Trump spoke. Some in the first lady's office also accused Ricardel of leaking damaging stories about Melania Trump. And Pentagon officials have said privately they believe Ricardel had a hand in spreading rumors this year about Mattis falling from favor with the White House and perhaps departing.

"I don't remember First Ladies being this involved publicly ever", she told Brooke Baldwin.

She also clashed with Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, according to reports, and was rumored to be behind rumors of his departure.

While she was first lady, Hillary Clinton fired one of the White House ushers for a reported "indiscretion", but no public announcement was made beforehand and firing a member of the staff is by no means equivalent to calling for the firing of a senior administration official.

The constant fighting almost led to Nielsen's resignation, but she was talked into staying be her mentor John Kelly.

Sources familiar with the matter tell CBS News Nielsen will be leaving, but say the timing is uncertain.

If Ricardel is in fact ousted from her position, it would reflect a large shift in stability for Bolton, as well: CNN reports that Ricardel has served a key role in Bolton's efforts to secure his position as an "influential adviser to the President on all foreign matters".

Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, has sought to bring more stability to the White House operation under the unpredictable Trump.
