Apple Investigating Claims of iPhone X Exploding After iOS 12.1 Update

iPhone X goes up in smoke during iOS 12.1 upgrade

The iPhone X was in process of getting updated to iOS 12.1 when, Mohamad says, he put it on charging. Both the adapter and lighting cable involved in this incident are official accessories bundled within the retail box. However, the phone apparently started emitting a dark grey smoke after it turned on post completion of the update.

Rahel Mohamad, a Washington resident, reported the issue to Apple on Twitter and included several photos of the scorched smartphone.

"This year early January I bought the iPhone and have been using it normally." he said. According to Mohamad, his handset was in the process of updating to iOS 12.1 last Wednesday when he plugged the phone into an outlet.

Indianexpress.com has not been able to independently verify the user's claim of the iPhone X exploding.

"When I held the phone it was very hot and I drop the phone immediately".

Apple Support has since responded to his tweet, claiming that this is not "expected behavior", and that he should message them to resolve it.The Tame Apple press has pointed out that the phone has been on the market for a year and no one else has had their phone explode. "DM us, so we can look into this with you".

Some have speculated that the issue could be a result of flaw in the iPhone's lithium battery. While that's reassuring, this isn't exactly the first time that an iPhone has exploded. For example, earlier this year, an iPhone 6 was seemingly caught on tape exploding in a fix shop.

Commonly used liquid electrolytes can be flammable, and they're also prone to forming dendrites - thin, finger-like protrusions of metal that build up from one electrode and, if they reach all the way across to the other electrode, can create a short-circuit that can damage the battery. Apple is extremely strict with its QA and a Galaxy Note 7-like fiasco is unlikely to happen with it.
