China's 'Artificial Sun' Marks Breakthrough for Nuclear Fusion

Our sun generates light and heat energy by a process called nuclear fusion, that's when two hydrogen nuclei combine to produce huge amount of energy; and if we could find a way to harness it, we would have a near-limitless source of clean energy.

China has taken a big step forward in the quest for nuclear fusion-an nearly unlimited source of clean, cheap energy that would harness power in the same way the Sun does. With the help of Tokamak devices like EAST, this might be possible. The fusion reactors would create more power while producing less unsafe waste. Numerous world's other energy sources, such as coal, produce carbon when processed, which contributes to climate change. Nuclear fusion occurs when nuclei are joined together to release energy.

China's Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, or "artificial Sun" as it is better known. This marks China as the first country to design and develop such an equipment on its own, according to China Daily.

In recent years, scientists working on the project have announced a number of breakthroughs.

Associate professor Matthew Hole from the Australian National University told ABC: "It's certainly a significant step for China's nuclear fusion program and an important development for the whole world".

Interestingly, an artificial Sun is the name given to nuclear fusion experiments, and it is not similar to the artificial moon that China is planning to send up to space soon. ITER's tokamak is now halfway through construction and is scheduled to generate power by December 2025. It is this plasma that led EAST to heat to such a high temperature.

What's surprising is that the scientists working there have now claimed to have produced temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius in the simulator - much more than 15 million degrees Celsius temperature of Sun's core.
