The 52-year-old woman, described only as a "female guest" on the Royal Princess from the US, died under unclear circumstances.

An American woman plunged to her death from an elevated deck on a cruise ship in the Caribbean on Tuesday - and police are investigating the case as a murder, according to reports. CBS News and USA Today report that some Aruba news outlets are saying authorities may be treating the incident as a possible murder; an island police update on Facebook Tuesday notes it doesn't appear to be a "natural death".

Princess Cruises confirmed to USA Today that a woman had died on the vessel, but did not share further details of the incident, the outlet stated.

A statement from the company said the incident "was reported to the local authorities who met and boarded the ship upon arrival".

An official cause of the woman's death has not yet been announced.

Princess Cruises is based in Santa Clarita, California.

The woman fell from the ship's upper deck onto a lifeboat below.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident and offer our honest condolences to the family and those affected", the line said. Passengers weren't allowed off the ship before the authorities arrived. Royal Princess is in the midst of a seven-day voyage to the Southern Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
