Fitchburg State Basketball Player Suspended For Dirty Shot To Opponent’s Head

Division III basketball player takes flagrant shot at opponent's head

Kewan Platt of Fitchburg State was taken out of the game after hitting Nate Tengalia of Nichols College with a vicious strike that left Tengalia on the ground after he connected on his shot. Late in the second half, Nichols' Nate Tenaglia knocked down an open corner 3.

Update: Platt has been suspended indefinitely and barred from campus by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The dirtiest play in college basketball has already been decided a week into the season.

Kewan Platt, who attends Fitchburg State University in MA, could face assault charges after landing a running elbow to an opponent this week. "We are aware that the Fitchburg State administration is handling the matter".

Tenaglia went down in pain, but according to the school's play-by-play, Platt was not called for a foul on the play. Tenaglia hit his three prior to taking the malicious shot to the face, giving Nichols a 13-point lead at the time.

Full video of the game confirms that there were no previous physical altercations but does provide a bit more context. We are proud of the way our student-athletes handled the incident and that they did not allow it to escalate.

Fitchburg State announced Platt's punishment via statement Wednesday afternoon, saying that it's "appalled" by his conduct. "The player involved has been indefinitely suspended from the team and barred from campus, effective immediately".

Nichols College, in its own statement, said Tenaglia was deemed OK to finish the game. The MASCAC has also vacated his player of the week award.

His behaviour is antithetical to our community values and good sportsmanship.
