Homeless vet, couple allegedly made up story for GoFundMe scam

Couple homeless man accused of making up story that earned $400K in donations

In a stunning turn, a New Jersey couple and a homeless who hit headlines over a viral GoFundMe campaign are now all facing charges, according to WCAU.

She said she ran out of gas in Philadelphia and was stuck on the highway when a homeless man named Johnny Bobbitt gave her his last $20.

The page was titled "Paying it Forward", and the response was incredible: 14,347 people donated $402,706 over the course of 10 months.

Authorities now believe it was all a ruse.

Prosecutors said that Mark D'amico and Kate McClure conspired with destitute Johnny Bobbitt to create the get-rich-quick scheme in 2017. Their lawyer, WCAU reported, had no comment.

Bobbitt accused the couple of dipping into the funds for personal expenses and sued them over mismanagement. His office announced a major update in the case would be released Thursday afternoon, but multiple news outlets in Philadelphia that cover the South Jersey area said the three now face charges of conspiracy and theft by deception.

Bobbitt reportedly was able to purchase a camper and SUV to the tune of about $75,000, but Bobbitt reportedly no longer has access to either one of those assets.

GoFundMe had said Bobbit would get the balance of the donations no matter how the money was spent. Police hauled away a new BMW and seized financial statements, jewelry and cash after gaining a warrant to search the couple's home.

The couple turned themselves in to authorities on Wednesday, but Bobbitt was still at large, the news station said. "It's important to remember that our platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means that in the rare case that GoFundMe, law enforcement or a user finds campaigns are misused, donors and beneficiaries are protected".
