Mets’ Jacob deGrom wins NL Cy Young Award

Jacob de Grom of the New York Mets

Blake Snell's transformation is complete: From high-potential prospect to one of the baseball's best pitchers.

Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer came up short in his bid for a third-consecutive National League Cy Young Award, as New York Mets hurler Jacob deGrom took home the award Wednesday night.

Snell also won his first Cy Young Award, earning 17 first-place votes en route to securing the honor. Snell pitched 180 innings. Justin Verlander finished a close second in the voting and trade target Corey Kluber finished third.

Snell was the 11th straight pitcher to win after leading the AL in wins (21) and ERA (1.89), and 14th of 15 since the award was given in both leagues starting in 1967.

A 25-year-old lefty, Snell had an across-the-board great season with a 21-5 record and 221 strikeouts and a 1.89 ERA. The end result was 3.39 ERA (2.95 FIP) with 220 strikeouts in 191.1 innings, which is obviously quite good.

Kluber, who won the award in 2014 and 2017, had another of his characteristically great years.

Snell joined David Price (2012) as the second Rays player to ever win an AL Cy Young, while DeGrom is the first Met to win since R.A. Dickey in 2012. Verlander also led the AL in strikeouts with 290. That and his MLB-best win total proved just how historic his 2018 performance was.

Snell's shortfall, compared to the 215 innings thrown by Kluber and 214 by Verlander, was due primarily to a two-week stint on the DL due to shoulder fatigue coming off his first All-Star Game appearance, plus the Rays' overall protective philosophy of handling young starters and aggressive bullpen usage.
