DeepMind's Streams technology team to join Google

Powles Tweet

"The team working within Google, alongside brilliant colleagues from across the organisation, will help make this vision a reality".

Streams was at the centre of some controversy in 2017 when the UK's data watchdog ruled that a British hospital hadn't taken enough care when sharing patient data with DeepMind early in the app's development.

Google is moving quickly to reorganise its efforts in healthcare, creating a new unit called Google Health and folding in the healthcare arm from its DeepMind AI subsidiary.

Some background: Google acquired London-based artificial intelligence startup DeepMind in 2014 for $500 million.

The company said the review board is overly focused on the United Kingdom, and would be "unlikely to be the right structure" to interact with an internationally oriented body.

"One of the reasons we joined forces with Google was to give us the platform to more rapidly bring our technologies to the wider world", said DeepMind co-founder and chief executive Demis Hassabis in a statement.

Also, the level and scope of research undertaken by DeepMind will continue unabated, which also applies to any partnership in place with academic organizations and such.

"Patient data remains under our partners" strict control, and all decisions about its use will continue to lie with them. Staff will remain in London under the leadership of former NHS surgeon and researcher Dominic King. It's being used in several NHS hospitals.

Powles told The Guardian that Google's position that it would process patients' data without associating them with Google "accounts, products or services" amounted to "sleight of hand".

Broken promises?: DeepMind repeatedly promised to never share data with its parent company Google. "The move to Google does not affect this".

'When we have promising results that could have impact at scale, we'll work closely with the Streams and transnational research teams at Google on how to implement research ideas into clinical settings'.
