Rebel Wilson's defamation payout reduced by 90%

Rebel Wilson's defamation payout reduced by 90%

Actress Rebel Wilson lost a bid to keep most of her defamation payout.

If Wilson is successful in her bid for leave to appeal, her case will be heard by the full bench of the High Court.

On today's High Court decision, Bauer Media's general counsel Adrian Goss said: "Bauer Media is pleased that the High Court has chosen to bring an end to this matter".

The Court of Appeal determined Ms Wilson couldn't prove economic loss or that she missed out on film contracts as a result of the Bauer articles and she was forced to repay most of her payout.

Bauer Media released a statement a short time ago, saying they were glad the lawsuit had come to an end.

The star of three "Pitch Perfect" movies and "Bridesmaids" won A$4.6 million ($3.5 million) in damages from the German publisher previous year after a court found a series of articles accusing her of lying about her age, name and childhood events had cost her roles.

Wilson's lawyers had argued she missed out on film roles between mid-2015 and the end of 2016 due to the "grapevine effect" the articles had within the film industry.

The actress was ordered to repay $4.1 million to Bauer, after the court ruled Wilson owed Bauer interest charges of $60,316.45, bringing the total to $4,183,071.45.

But the court refused the application, with costs.

"In our opinion there are insufficient prospects that an appeal will succeed", Justice Virginia Bell said at the court in the national capital, Canberra.

"I've moved on personally and professionally, and it's great now that it's all at a definite end", she said outside court.

The magazine publisher welcomed the decision. "Our audience trust our content and our writers and they love our iconic brands like Woman's Day and Australian Women's Weekly". I am proud of this victory and all of the hard fight!

"Today was just about a small point of special damages and for me it was never about the money, it was about standing up to a bully and I've done that".

Wilson has starred in Hollywood films such as Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect.
