Government moves to curb rising cases of resistances to antibiotics

The launch of the antibiotics awareness program at King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah

As antibiotic resistance spreads, commonly-used and once-effective drugs will become useless, and the pool of medications for doctors to treat people with shrinks.

New Delhi, Nov 16 India's action plan to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has made limited progress and it must beef up efforts including a clear roadmap to stop overuse of antibiotics and their misuse in animals that are important for humans, a Delhi-based research and advocacy body said Friday. Hold your doctor accountable and see that antibiotics are only being prescribed when truly needed and consider the use of antibiotics when choosing where your food dollars go.

Millions of people will die of antibiotic-resistant infections in the next three decades, a report has warned.

He expressed these views while addressing a policy and advocacy seminar on antibiotic awareness organised by Hepatitis and Infection Control Programme, Punjab, in collaboration with World Health Organisation at a local hotel. Only take antibiotics prescribed to you, and never share them, not even with family.

Hygiene should be better in hospitals and clinics, and better testing should be used to check if infections are viral to avoid unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, officials said.

You can help. When you're sick, let your doctors use their clinical skills and judgment to decide whether you need an antibiotic to lessen the chance of unnecessarily fostering resistance.

200 - the percentage increase in antibiotic use predicted to occur by 2030.

"So we can have a cancer drug that may extend somebody's life by six months and that can cost between $5,000 and $100,000", he said, "And on the other hand, we can have an antibiotic that will fully save somebody's life and we get up in arms if that drug costs any more than $1,000".

"If we fail to take adequate measures now, in the decades to come we may be faced with the frightening scenario where our antibiotics will no longer be effective, and illnesses and diseases that we are able to cure with antibiotics at present could become potentially risky superbugs of the future", Messina concluded.

Pfizer, for example, created AMR surveillance tools that provide physicians and health communities in over 70 countries free access to critical data on the efficacy of various antibiotic treatments and emerging resistance patterns.

"This means longer and more expensive treatment of infectious diseases and postoperative complications, higher mortality rates".

"Everyone has a role in the prevention of antibiotic resistance, and individuals can make a significant contribution in their daily lives through being more aware of the threat it poses and following a few simple guidelines", Messina says. The key message is that antibiotics should only ever be taken when a patient actually requires them to treat a specific bacterial infection.

'In the post-Brexit world, it will be even more vital that we increase our standards on antibiotics use by doctors and farmers, so that the United Kingdom is a world leader, saving our antibiotics to save lives in future'.

'Drug-resistant superbugs are on the rise worldwide and represent a fundamental threat to global health and development.
