New Zealand to host 2021 Women's Rugby World Cup

The New Zealand squad celebrates winning the Rugby World Cup in 2015 but many familiar faces like Richie Mc Caw and Dan Carter are gone

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) revealed the match venues for the tournament on Wednesday, with Wellington set to welcome the Springboks, while Eden Park in Auckland will host the Kiwi's Bledisloe Cup encounter against the Wallabies.

Dr Palmer, the legendary Black Ferns captain turned New Zealand Rugby board member, led the winning presentation at a World Rugby council meeting in Dublin alongside former All Blacks midfielder and fellow NZR director Mark Robinson.

New Zealand are reigning champions, with the Black Ferns having won every Women's World Cup since their first win in 1998, apart from England's famous victory in 2014.

The Wellington test match will effectively be a dress rehearsal of the All Blacks and South Africa's much-anticipated opening pool match of Rugby World Cup in Japan in September.

"We have already said we're keen to host the men's World Cup in 2027 so all of our focus moves to that now".

"I would also like to thank Australia for their exceptional bid". "It's not very often we compete with Australia and think it's unfair to win but today was a day that could've gone either way", Tew said. We've been thinking about this for a year, we've got a team that's put forward a really good bid. It was the sixth time the Black Ferns have taken the cup home, and their Sevens counterparts also retained their World Cup title earlier this year as well.

"I'm hugely excited the event will be held here", New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

England and Wales had both expressed interest in hosting the tournament but dropped out, as did a joint French and Portuguese bid, leaving only Australia and New Zealand in the final stage of bidding.

New Zealand powerbrokers have been promised $10million in central government support for the tournament which will be based in Auckland and Northland and this appears to be what got their bid over the line.

Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development general manager destination, Steve Armitage, said hosting the women's Rugby World Cup was consistent with the region becoming a world centre for women in sport in the next five years.

New Zealand will be the first nation in the southern hemisphere to host the women's tournament, which was last staged in Ireland in 2017.

McDonald Jones Stadium would've hosted the final.
