Canada Post must deal with 'injury crisis' to end walkouts, says union

Canada Post workers strike hits Winnipeg again with a deal on the table

Rotating strikes resumed on Monday at 8 p.m. for members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville and Lake Charlotte to Hubbards.

Canada Post is also proposing sending a matter on the handling of mail to arbitration.

"The strike action is still rotating strikes so it is possible we could be back on the job [Thursday], but we wanted to let everybody know that until further notice there would no mail processed and no mail delivered in HRM", Keefe said.

CUPW, which is negotiating contracts for 50,000 of its members in two divisions - urban carriers and rural and suburban workers - said Tuesday that Canada Post was refusing to address key issues, including health and safety, staffing levels, over-burdening and job security. There has been some movement on a few issues but we have a long way to go.

"Several important issues have not been addressed. Obviously this does not constitute a basis for settlement", states the CUPW Wednesday afternoon.

"The negotiating committee is now reviewing the offers and we won't have any comments until the review is complete", Tobin said.

A letter signed by the union's chief negotiators, Nancy Beauchamp and Sylvain Lapointe, and posted to the CUPW website said the negotiating committee is analyzing Canada Post's proposal and would be putting out a more detailed bulletin.

"It is more important than ever for all of you to show your support for your demands".

But Canada Post said the offer was only viable if it can be agreed to before the holiday shopping rush.

Continued rotating strikes at Canada Post will result in significant losses for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across the country, Stairs warned, noting that smaller businesses are unable to negotiate lower shipping fees with other delivery services.

"The time limit is necessary as this offer is only affordable if we can clear the backlogs caused by the union's strike activity and effectively deliver the quickly arriving massive Black Friday and Cyber Monday volumes".

Canada Post and CUPW have been negotiating for almost a year, most recently with the help of a federally appointed mediator, whose mandate expired this week.

"Without a quick return to normal operations, backlogs will rapidly increase and cause significant impacts to the Canadian retail economy, especially to smaller retailers".

"The union feels that the only action for the government left to take is to introduce back-to-work legislation and that sort of rewards Canada Post for not bargaining seriously for the last 12 months", said Keefe.
