Democrat Andrew Gillum concedes Florida governor's race following vote recount

Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes watches workers do a hand recount

In a Facebook video, the Democrat conceded the race Saturday after finding himself 30,000 votes behind Republican Ron DeSantis in a legally mandated machine recount.

"This has been the journey of our lives", said Gillum, appearing in the video with his wife, R. Jai Gillum. "I encourage ya'll to keep fighting for what we believe in".

DeSantis said on Twitter, 'This was a hard-fought campaign.

"R. Jai and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Mr. DeSantis on becoming the next governor of the great state of Florida", Gillum said in the video.

But by Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline, when the results of a statewide machine recount were due, DeSantis still maintained a margin wide enough to avoid triggering a further manual recount, essentially ensuring his status as governor-elect.

Back in 2000, the state became the target of ridicule during the chaotic recount of the presidential election that was ultimately won by George W. Bush by 537 votes.

DeSantis defeated Gillum by 33,683 votes, or 0.41 percentage points.

The Gillum-DeSantis race for Governor wasn't the only contest that went to a recount.

Last month, Trump denounced Gillum as a "thief" - a term that raised eyebrows given the racial connotations. "Now it's time to bring Florida together". Republican Rick Scott leads in that race.

Both parties and their supporters filed multiple lawsuits challenging the process, with Republicans urging a strict standard on which votes were counted while Democrats contested rules that they saw as disenfranchising voters.

'We have been trying to determine what could have caused the drop.

"The ballots are in the building, " Snipes tells members of the canvassing board responsible for doing the hand recount.

Counties have until noon on Sunday to report official results to the U.S. Department of State. The totals for Nelson and Scott have changed slightly, but not significantly.

Gillum's announcement came as most Florida counties were winding down their hand recount in the state's contentious US Senate race.

At least 44 out of 67 counties have finished their hand recount in the Senate race.
