Province announces new hours for LCBO, Beer Store outlets

Ontario Establishes Strict Regulations for the Licensing and Operation of Private Cannabis Stores

"Now that hours are expanded, it is time to allow for private retail sale in Ontario convenience stores, and to end the LCBO's monopoly on the sale of spirits", said Clement.

There is no word on when the changes to LCBO hours would take effect or if every liquor store in the province would operate under the new hours.

Right now, most LCBO stores in Toronto close at 9 p.m., with several closing at 10 p.m. and a few already closing at 11 p.m.

Currently, alcohol can be sold within those hours from Monday to Saturday, but only from 11 a.m.to 6 p.m. on Sunday. LCBO has told CityNews those details will only be revealed once the Doug Ford government officially announces the expansion on Thursday.

"This distance buffer will help protect students and keep communities safe, while other regulations will combat the influence and participation of organized crime in the legal licensed framework", the statement says.

Until April 1, 2019, cannabis can only be legally purchased in Ontario online through the provincial government run Ontario Cannabis Store.

Retailers will not be permitted to allow anyone under the age of 19 to enter their stores. Notably, illegal cannabis retailers who were operating after October 17, 2018 are not eligible for Ontario cannabis sales licenses.

Also, licences won't be issued to any person or organization that has an association with organized crime, and applicants must demonstrate their tax compliance status to show they are in good standing with the government in terms of paying their taxes.

A requirement for all private recreational cannabis retail storefronts to be stand-alone stores only.
