Trolley Man faces court on burglary charges after handing himself in

Michael Rogers has been hailed as a hero for ramming the knife-wielding attacker in Melbourne's Bourke Street with a trolley

Shire Ali stabbed three men - fatally wounding Pellegrini's Espresso Bar co-owner Sisto Malaspina - before he was shot in the chest by police and later died in hospital.

Michael Rogers had been dubbed a hero after trying to ram the knife-wielding Hassan Khalif Shire Ali with a shopping cart after the stabbing rampage last Friday afternoon.

Donna Stolzenberg, CEO of the Melbourne Homeless Collective that set up the GoFundMe campaign, told the Herald Sun she was with Rogers on Thursday evening when he rang police about their concerns and that he would "own up and do the right thing" if there were any charges.

He has been charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, and committing an indictable offence on bail.

"He has been remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court (on Saturday)", police said in an emailed statement.

The police prosecutor argued on Saturday that Rogers did not deserve bail as he posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending and had a lengthy criminal history.

Rogers, 46, became a media celebrity after the attack, his sudden fame also leading to 140,000 Australian dollars ($100,000) being raised for him in an online funding drive. "I didn't quite get him down, though".

"He's still the same person as before last night's newsbreak".

The charity said people's generosity would be life-changing for Rogers.

She added while the terms and conditions of that trust fund had yet to be ironed out, Michael would have input in the future decisions.

Magistrate Bob Kumar gave Rogers bail on strict conditions that he stay away from the CBD and reside with relatives in an outer suburb, observe a 9pm to 6am curfew, participate in drug and counselling programs and report daily to police.
