Your genes make you tea or coffee lover

This most recent study however, used the data of over 400,000 respondents from the UK Biobank, a long-term biobank study in Britain, and the authors said the results paint a clear picture that genetically determined differences in bitter taste perception, is directly linked to our choice of hot beverage. This sensitivity is not only limited to taste but preferably is affected by an individual's inherited make up.

"You'd expect that people who are particularly sensitive to the bitter taste of caffeine would drink less coffee", Marilyn Cornelis, an assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine said in a university announcement. This discovery is astonishing provided that tartness often serves as a deterrent apparatus to persuade people to spew detrimental substances.

Previous studies have found that people taste bitter flavours like caffeine, quinine and an artificial substance called propylthiouracil differently according to the types of taste receptor genes they have. The degree of bitterness of these depends on the genes. To the researchers' surprise, people who were more sensitive to caffeine reported increased coffee consumption compared with people who were less sensitive.

Sonia is a postgraduate of Mass Communication but her interest lies in writing. The prop-sensitive group, in fact, was also less likely to drink alcohol, particularly red wine.

Also, as study co-author Jue Sheng Ong tells Laura Geggel of Live Science, the research didn't account for the flavorings-like cream and sugar-that people use to reduce coffee's bitter taste.

Do you prefer coffee or tea? Those who are sensitive to the taste of PROP were nine percent more likely to be heavy tea drinkers.

But we didn't know whether genes for bitter taste perception were involved in determining consumption of bitter-tasting beverages. However, coffee, tea, and alcohol are all widely consumed beverages worldwide, all of which have an inherently bitter taste.

In this new study, we examined the consumption of coffee and tea in a large Biobank cohort of more than 400,000 men and women aged 37 to 73 in the United Kingdom for whom we also had data about their bitter receptor genes. And these people were also less likely to drink tea.

But we can't blame everything on your genes.

We're interested to see if this finding could lead to future studies investigating whether "super-tasters" of bitter molecules are more or less prone to drink high and perhaps even unhealthy amounts of coffee and tea, or other drinks containing bitter molecules.

A coffee grinder can give you the professionally brewed taste you love without breaking your bank - and you don't even need to leave your kitchen.

But genes likely aren't the only factors driving people's tastes. Read the original article.
