South Africa's Ramaphosa to repay campaign donation

President Cyril Ramaphosa

Maimane posed the question about the payment during a Q&A session in Parliament.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said his campaign to become leader of the ruling African National Congress past year received a payment from a firm with links to his son and that he previously and inadvertently gave incorrect information about it to parliament.

Ramaphosa's campaign team on Saturday said it will return the Bosasa donation, Cape Town-based News24 reported, citing a statement.

The relationship between money and political power, as one former Ghanaian president once remarked, is as old as politics itself.

Opposition parties have called on the president to be beyond reproach and account for the money.

"What took place at Bosasa is a modus operandi that the ANC has always done; set up a company, give it government contracts and then friends and family members benefit".

Just this month, he described the corruption plaguing South Africa as an "amoeba" with "tentacles all over".

On Friday, opposition parties called on Ramaphosa to account for his action after he revealed that he received money from Bosasa.

"In an ideal world, President Ramaphosa should subject himself to the ANC integrity committee", said Booysen.

The DA's spokesperson Solly Malatsi said the president must clarify the matter.

"It was brought to my attention a long time ago and I proceeded to ask my son what this was all about", the president said.

After investigating the matter further, Ramaphosa found that the "donation" had in fact funded his presidential bid, and "does not relate" to his son's BOSASA contract.
