U.K.'s Royal Mail suspends shipments to Canada amid strikes

Canada Post asks for halt to international shipments as parcel backlog grows

Negotiations between Canada Post and the CUPW are ongoing.

The Royal Mail in England has said that it is halting shipments to Canada because of the strike, according to The Huffington Post.

The decision isn't coming from across the pond, however, as Royal Mail says it made the move at the request of Canada Post.

"After a year at the bargaining table, it looks like Canada Post is ready to start negotiating", Palecek said in an interview.

"Should the Canada Post service disruptions continue through this key retail moment, these SMBs will be seriously disadvantaged in competing for USA demand".

Canada Post also said in their statement that the Canadian retail economy is "at risk if more than half of Canada's holiday parcel capacity is compromised".

The union wants concrete proposals for dealing with an escalating number of work injuries at Canada Post - and not processes created to punt worker safety concerns down the road, said Palecek.

The rotating walkouts continued Thursday at processing plants in Montreal and Winnipeg, as well as at smaller locations in Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador. With hundreds of trailers backlogged in major parcel centres in Toronto and Vancouver, the offer is a last ditch effort to reach a resolution in time to fulfil gift orders.

It's to prevent any more backlog within Canada, as trucks full of mail and packages have been sitting idle for days and the company is facing delays of at least 30 days for delivery. "The time limit is necessary as this offer is only affordable if we can clear the backlogs caused by the union's strike activity and effectively deliver the quickly arriving massive Black Friday & Cyber Monday volumes", they said. All three have been shut down several times since the walkouts began October 22.

This followed a warning from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that his government was prepared to step in to settle the labour dispute ahead of the upcoming holiday season.

CUPW said Thursday there has been limited progress on issues including job security for a minority of rural and suburban carriers, known as RSMCs, and pay for hours worked.

There's also people sending presents through the mail to loved ones, that could be affected by job action.
