Chipotle rehires manager fired in racial discrimination incident

Company Rethinks Firing of Manager

The unidentified manager of a Chipotle restaurant in St. Paul, Minnesota, can be seen in a viral clip posted to Twitter smiling and saying, "You gotta pay because you never have money when you come in here", to the group of customers. The company said it will be offering to retrain for the staff at the restaurant as well.

A young female manager at a Minnesota-area Chipotle was sacked and slandered as a racist in the press after a group of black men accused her of racially profiling.

"We're not going to make food unless you guys actually have money", a server said in the video.

A Chipotle manager has been fired following allegations from a Black customer that he, along with his friends, was denied service at the burrito chain last week. Generally, the company doesn't ask customers to pay for their meals before making them.

The manager fired from Chipotle for the incident has not made a statement.

Ali, who was one of the customers, told theStar Tribune that he thought the employees came off as racist because they were being accused of being customers from a previous night where a group had dined and dashed at the restaurant. "We are committed to doing the right thing and acting in a manner consistent with a thoughtful, fact-driven approach".

A Change.org petition was set up to help the manager get her job back.

'Dine and dash is forever interesting, ' Ali wrote in a since-deleted tweet from July 2015.

After the manager was sacked, other people on Twitter began re-posting past tweets from Ali's wherein he talked about "dining and dashing" or ordering food at a restaurant and leaving before paying.

Following the termination, other Twitter users came to the defense of the manager, pointing out tweets posted to Ali's Twitter account boasting about "dining and dashing" or ordering food at a restaurant and leaving before paying.

WCCO-TV reached out to Ali for comment, but he said his lawyer has advised him not to speak with the media.

"Our actions were based on the facts known to us immediately after the incident, including video footage, social media posts and conversations with the customer, manager, and our employees", Laurie Schalow, Chipotle's chief communications officer, said in an email to the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper.

In light of the additional information, Chipotle said on Sunday that it was reviewing its decision to fire the manager. We now have additional information which needs to be investigated further.
