DUP fires warning shot at Theresa May over Brexit

PA Wire

But facing a motion from 70 MPs across both sides of the benches including many Conservative rebels she was forced to back down and agree to publish the details before parliament votes on the Brexit agreement. The agreement faced criticism both from the opposition and from the ruling party, with several members of May's cabinet having resigned over their disagreement with the deal.

In a warning to May, DUP lawmakers abstained or opposed the government during several votes on finance bill late Monday.

The tactic, which saw the DUP siding with Labour, was "designed to send a political message to the government: Look, we've got an agreement with you but you've got to keep your side of the bargain otherwise we don't feel obliged to keep ours", stated Wilson.

May defended her deal in an article for Tuesday's Belfast Telegraph, saying it "puts Northern Ireland in a fantastic position for the future".

May said she was confident the deal "will work for the U.K".

In better news for the beleaguered British leader, a leading pro-Brexit lawmaker acknowledged that the rebels haven't mustered the numbers for a leadership challenge.

They will be released before MPs vote on whether to accept or reject a final deal on the divorce terms.

The no-confidence vote may be announced by the backbench 1922 Committee of the UK Parliament's House of Commons, which should receive 48 letters in favour of the motion from Conservative lawmakers. It is due to end in December 2020 but can be extended by mutual agreement if more time is needed.

Explaining why she is unhappy with the Conservative leadership she once again said she does not like the proposed Brexit deal because it does not give the United Kingdom a voice at the EU.

The 585-page, legally binding withdrawal agreement is as good as complete, but Britain and the European Union still need to flesh out a far less detailed declaration on their future relations.

Despite having lost some members of her Cabinet last week, including Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, May used her speech on Monday to stress that she intends to move ahead on the so-called divorce agreement with the European Union, with plans to head to Brussels later this week to thrash out details of the UK's future relationship with the 27-member economic bloc after Britain has formally left in March 29, 2019.

Spain, meanwhile, has also threatened to frustrate Mrs May's proposals, insisting that any deal covering the British territory of Gibraltar must be approved by Spain.

CBI president John Allan said such a Brexit would be a "wrecking ball" for Britain's economy while CBI director-general Carolyn Fairbairn said politicians were playing a high-stakes game that could lead to an accidental, no-deal departure.
