Foster + Partners designs bulbous tourist attraction tower for London

The viewing galleries will offer visitors an engaging experience with sky bridges, internal glass slides and gondola pod rides on the building's façade.

At the 984-foot-high observation deck, visitors would be able to take in 360-degree views of London and beyond.

"Continuing the pioneering design of 30 St Mary Axe, the Tulip is in the spirit of London as a progressive, forward-thinking city", said Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman of Foster + Partners, in a statement.

Foster + Partners revealed on Monday that plans have been submitted for The Tulip, which is envisioned as a "state-of-the-art cultural and educational resource" offering a vantage point 300m above the city. If all goes well, Foster + Partners expects construction to start in 2020 and for it to be completed by 2025.

The height of buildings in the city's financial district are restricted by flight paths into London City airport. It's a fun destination only, created to offer one of those modern super-high viewing platform experiences that tourists love going up so much, with this one even coming with transparent pods that circulate around the outside of the very tip of the building for an even better view of the surrounds.

Also described as 'a classroom in the sky, ' the future landmark will include an educational facility for local schoolchildren, with 20,000 free visits offered per year.

If it gets the green light from the City of London Corporation, the Tulip would be built by Bury Street Properties - part of the Brazilian banking billionaire Joseph Safra's empire which purchased the Gherkin in 2014 for more than £700m.

"The Tulip's elegance and soft strength complements the iconic Gherkin".
