Google Cloud CEO stepping down to welcome ex-Oracle exec

However, she will still retain her position as director for Google's parent company Alphabet. Google Cloud executives had indicated that they would've liked to own GitHub, but they didn't have signoff from Alphabet's board to write the check, people familiar with the matter said. In one example, sources said that Greene would attempt to make other Google business partnerships and advertising deals "contingent on a deal of some kind with the company's cloud unit"- including one with Salesforce.

Her management also spurred questions from some employees about Google's work for the US government.

Greene said she originally meant to stay at Google for just two years, and now the executive is ready to focus on her passions, which include mentoring and education. Kurian spent 22 years at Oracle and most recently served as President of Product Development. The company retracted its bid for a multibillion cloud-computing contract with the Pentagon amid worker protests over Google's support for the US military.

After AWS, Microsoft and Google are still running in second and third place, respectively, but experts commend Google Cloud's technical proficiency.

In March, Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia's state-run oil giant, announced a partnership for "national cloud services and other technology opportunities" as part of a push to modernize the kingdom.

Greene said she plans to turn her attention to mentoring and education.

Now at Google Cloud, Kurian will be responsible for clawing back market share from the cloud leaders AWS, Microsoft and IBM, something he wasn't able to do at Oracle.

In her blog post, Greene highlighted some of these personal achievements, including the establishment of "a training and professional services organisation and partnering organisations". But he had a hard time transitioning the company to Cloud computing and Oracle struggled to gain much traction against Amazon Web Services and Microsoft's Azure.

Bloomberg reported at the time of Kurian's resignation (around late October, early November) that it had arisen from disagreements between him and Ellison. He'll now have a chance to try it again.

It's also worth noting that AWS and Azure had some eight years' head start on Google's cloud efforts, which began in 2016, and Greene's appointment saw its campaign quickly gather pace, securing multiple, high-profile enterprise wins, including Spotify, Snap, 20th Century Fox, eBay, and The Home Depot, among no shortage of others.

Kurian stepped down from Oracle in September.
