Holidaymakers evacuated as Tenerife struck by 40ft high waves

The frightening footage shows waves violently crashing and destroying balconies on the third floor of the apartment complex in the popular tourist spot Mesa del March.

At least 40 people have been evacuated from sea-front areas of the Brit holiday hotspot after humungous waves devastated properties in the municipality of Garachico.

Twenty town halls in the region, including the Costa Blanca holiday resorts of Javea and Denia, have announced schools will be shut tomorrow because of the bad weather alert.

The local council said 67 apartments in the block had been evacuated, with nearby beaches, roads and pools also closed.

The area is a popular spot among Irish tourists however no Irish have been reported to have been caught up in the incident.

Dozens of people have been evacuated from their houses during the storm that erupted on the northern coast of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands.

According to the Spanish meteorological agency, an orange-level alert about waves in the Canary Islands has been downgraded to yellow, which is expected to stand until Monday morning. Dramatic footage captures balconies being substantially destroyed.
