Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane leave Republic of Ireland

O’Neill is no longer the manager of Ireland

The management team of Keane, Seamus McDonagh (goalkeeping coach), and Steve Guppy (assistant coach) have also parted company with the FAI.

Ireland enjoyed a memorable Euro 2016 campaign under O'Neill, beating Italy in the group stages, but have suffered a steep decline in the last 12 months.

A dismal turn-out in their Nations League group resulted in Ireland being relegated to League C.

The Football Association of Ireland has announced the departure of manager Martin O'Neill and his assistant Roy Keane.

Speaking after the scoreless draw in Denmark on Monday, O'Neill indicated that he wanted to remain in the job. O'Neill departs amid growing disillusionment among fans, the side having gone 397 minutes without a goal and having won only one of their nine games in 2018.

Not only did Ireland fail to score in the friendly vs Northern Ireland last week and the Nations League clash vs Denmark, but they also failed to register a shot on target in the latter.

O'Neill, who led Ireland out of the group stage of the European Championships for the first time and was just one game away from qualifying for their first World Cup since 2002 this time a year ago, has endured a torrid 2018.

According to The Telegraph's Luke Edwards, a journalist who has broken stories related to O'Neill in the past, Delaney was alarmed by the poor attendance at Ireland's goalless draw with Northern Ireland at the Aviva last week and hopes that a change of management team will end criticism of the FAI.

'There have been many highlights during Martin's reign - none more so than EURO 2016 in France, which will live long in the memory of all Irish supporters.

Martin O'Neill reportedly attended an emergency meeting with FAI CEO John Delaney on Tuesday night.

'I wish Martin, and the management team, the very best for the future'.

Ireland's relegation in the Nations League means they will be among the third seeds for the European qualifiers as they look for a new manager.
