President Buhari, 78 others in the fray for Nigerian polls

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is hoping that his corruption clean-up will win him a second term.

The presidential aide, who was reacting to a report by one of the national dailies, explained that the service chiefs had wanted to witness the event only to leave before it got underway after discovering the nature of the event.

The Presidency on Monday described the appearance of service chiefs at Sunday's launch of President Muhammadu Buhari's campaign manual as "mistaken assumption".

"Corruption is an existential threat to Nigeria". The country emerged from its first recession in a quarter of a century - largely caused by low crude prices - a year ago.

The president however says actions like placing all government revenues and funds recovered in corruption investigations into the Treasury Single Account (TSA), have buffered the country from oil dependency. Nigeria is faced with a choice to keep building a new Nigeria - making a break from its tainted past which favoured an opportunistic few.

Despite the president's focus on tackling corruption, there have not been any significant convictions related to graft in his first term.

According to the document, President Buhari will rather focus on completing the ongoing works on the nation's road and rail infrastructure to pave way for citizens to benefit from the expanded capital investments the current administration has made.

"We have no other country, let us not set it ablaze because of politics, " President Buhari said at the event, which was witnessed by Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo and wife of the president, Aisha Buhari.

"If the state of the average Nigerian has not improved in the last three and a half years, more of the same is obviously not what they need", Atiku's camp said.

"We will remodel 10,000 schools every year and retain our teachers to impart science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics using coding, animation, robotics to re-interpreter our curriculum".
