U.S. Troops to Start Leaving Southern Border

The US president spent the final weeks of the midterms election campaign whipping up fears of a migrant caravan travelling through Mexico towards the border.

The U.S. also closed one of two pedestrian crossings at the San Ysidro crossing in a move apparently aimed at preventing any mass rush of migrants across the border. "Mexico has always opened its doors to Central Americans to legal and organized migration but not to the illegal invasion that's now taking place", said organizer Jesus Eduardo Burgos Gomez.

The Army might shift some of its troops along the border to California where caravans of migrants seeking asylum have gathered in Tijuana, Mexico across the border from San Diego, but clarified that no timelines have been determined for the possibility that some troops could leave the border ahead of the mission's scheduled end on December 15.

Mexican officials expect the number of migrants aggregating in Tijuana near the San Ysidro border crossing to exceed 10,000 soon, and that swelling number of asylum-seekers will require housing, which the government says it does not have the resources to provide.

Homeland Security shut down incoming traffic at the country's busiest land-border crossing in order to harden the port of entry, Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Monday.

Long lines backed up in Tijuana, where many people have to cross the border to work on the US side. It is the busiest border crossing between the two countries, with about 110,000 people entering the USA every day in 40,000 vehicles. 'I can not believe this is happening'.

Those obstacles include concertina wire, shipping containers, and concrete barriers at ports of entry.

Critics charged that his talk of a migrant "invasion" was an effort to rouse his political base ahead of the elections.

Instead, their mission is to lend support to the CBP, and they have been stringing up concertina wire and erecting temporary housing.

The majority in the Central American caravan have refused Mexico's repeated offers of residency or asylum, and vowed to cross the border.

For most people in this city of 1.6 million, the arrival of thousands of Central Americans is not noticeable.

Hundreds of local residents on Sunday massed at a monument in a wealthy neighborhood of Tijuana to protest the arrival of the migrants, with some carrying signs that said "Mexico first" and "No more migrants".

Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum has made a point of saying the city is not comfortable with the caravan that began arriving last week, and he compared the Central American group unfavourably with about 3,000 Haitians who ended up in this city bordering San Diego on a failed bid to reach the United States previous year.

Other bands of mostly Salvadorans followed, with a small group setting off on Sunday from San Salvador.
