Amazon Go: Bigger cashierless stores reportedly being tested

Larger Amazon Go-powered stores are being tested

If you venture into an Amazon Go store, you're likely an early adopter who knows what to expect.

The e-commerce giant is testing the technology, which is already in use at Amazon-branded convenience stores, in a larger store format in Seattle, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Although Amazon has previously denied plans to introduce cashierless technology to Whole Foods, the WSJ's sources say that would be the most likely application of adapting the technology for larger spaces.

Higher ceilings and shelves, and a bigger product range means it could take more time for Amazon to get the technology right, which now works well for smaller stores. Although the technology functions well in its current small-store format, it is harder to use it in bigger spaces with higher ceilings and more products, one of the people said, meaning it could take time to roll out the systems at more larger stores.

Back then, Amazon said it had no intention of rolling out the technology to Whole Foods (the grocery chain it bought for a massive $13.7 million last year), but apparently it may have changed its mind and is testing "a larger space formatted like a big store".

Amazon and Whole Foods did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

An existing Amazon Go store. Whole Foods, on the other hand, serves virtually everyone.

Inside of Amazon's Go stores, products are systematically placed on shelves full of indicators that are easily recognized by computer vision systems. It is reportedly considering opening 3,000 such stores across America. Whole Foods sales are driven by produce items, for instance, whose prices vary by weight.
