David Attenborough: 'The collapse of our civilizations is on the horizon'

"I remind all Parties that this is a deadline you set for yourselves and it is vital you meet it", Guterres added.

He was speaking at the opening of a United Nations climate change conference in Poland on Monday, where delegates from across the world will negotiate how to tackle the issue.

If the world is to truly prevent climate change-and the extreme weather disasters and rising seas that accompanies it-the attendees of the United Nations climate conference will have to disagree with Duda.

British broadcaster and environmentalist David Attenborough on Monday (Dec 3) urged world leaders, meeting in Poland to agree ways to limit global warming, to get on and tackle "our greatest threat in thousands of years".

"The upcoming climate talks are the most important round of negotiations since the Paris Agreement was reached three years ago", Lou Leonard, the World Wildlife Fund's senior vice president for climate change and energy, told CNBC of the talks that gather thousands of world leaders, activists, and policymakers to flesh out a framework for the Paris Climate Agreement.

The UN said the extent of climate action must be increased fivefold to limit global warming to the 1.5 degrees Celsius urged by scientists.

Net zero emissions mean that any greenhouse gases emitted need to be soaked up by forest or new technologies that can remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Such a move, which experts say is the only way to achieve the 1.5-degree goal, would require a radical overhaul of the global economy and a move away from using fossil fuels.

Guterres asked governments to find ways to replace fossil fuels - which contribute about 65 per cent of global greenhouse gases, according to the EPA - with cleaner alternatives.

Guterres said governments should embrace the opportunities rather than cling to fossil fuels such as coal, a dig at hosts Poland.

The opening ceremony could not have been more dramatic as Attenborough warned that climate change is a man-made disaster on a global scale.

Climate Action Minister Richard Bruton, who is in Poland for the talks, said he fully endorsed UN Secretary-General António Guterres's comments about the need to take action. "It's very sad, but if they don't do anything right now that is the truth".

"A failure to act now risks pushing us beyond a point of no return with catastrophic consequences for life as we know it", said Amjad Abdulla, chief negotiator at the COP24 for the Alliance of Small Island States.

"Or, God forbid, [we] ignore the irrefutable evidence and become the generation that betrayed humanity", Bainimarama said. At the top of the agenda is the so-called Paris rulebook, which determines how countries have to count their greenhouse gas emissions, report them to the rest of the world and reveal what they are doing to reduce them.

The Arc de Triomphe is illuminated in green with the words "Paris Agreement is Done", to celebrate the Paris U.N. COP21 Climate Change agreement in Paris, France, Nov. 4, 2016.

Calling Mr Trump "meshugge" - Yiddish for "crazy" - for deciding to withdraw from the Paris accord, Schwarzenegger insisted the climate deal had widespread support at local and state levels in the US.

But in his opening remarks Monday, Polish President Andrzej Duda said coal "does not contradict the protection of the climate and the progress of climate protection".

Officials from almost 200 countries now have two weeks to finalize how those goals work in practice, even as science suggests the pace of climate change is rapidly outstripping mankind's response.
