Paul Sherwen, Renowned Cycling Commentator, Dies At 62

Former British champion and broadcaster Paul Sherwen has died at the age of 62

Mark Cavendish has joined many others in the cycling world who are paying tribute to a popular broadcaster who has died.

No further details of his death have been revealed.

Sherwen was the national circuit race champion in 1986 and road race champion the following year, results which came towards the end of a career which also saw him compete in seven editions of the Tour de France between 1978 and 1985.

Sherwen covered 26 Tour de France events as a commentator and was a cycling analyst for NBC at the Olympics in 1996, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Sherwen helped create Paul's Peloton, which brought bicycles to Africa, and advocated for African wildlife as chairperson of the Ugandan Conservation Foundation and supporter of the Helping Rhinos initiative.

But it was as part of SBS's cycling coverage - not just of the Tour de France but also the Tour Down Under - that Sherwen became a much-respected and loved figure within Australian cycling, beginning with the network's first Tour coverage in 1991.

Shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Paul Sherwen.

"We are saddened to hear the news of the passing of Paul Sherwen and would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and the whole cycling community".

"I knew him for over 20 years and listened to him and Phil for nearly 30".

"We are saddened to offer our condolences to the friends and family of Paul Sherwen, who passed away this morning at his home in Uganda", the statement read.

"I met Paul in 1992 when he worked as our press officer for Team Motorola", wrote Armstrong. He always pretended he remembered me from my racing days.

'He was always a class act and a great friend.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Paul's family, and also with Phil Liggett, during this hard time", they said.
