United States urges Europe to impose sanctions on Iran over missiles

"Iran has managed to attain a very desirable and acceptable performance in the field of defensive products and the (Iranian) Defence Ministry has become self-sufficient in defence industry despite tough sanctions by the arrogant powers in the past 40 years", he was quoted as saying.

Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Iran had test launched a medium-range ballistic missile that was capable of carrying multiple warheads in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Iran's UN Mission said that the country's ballistic missile program is purely defensive and a "deterrent tool against foreign threats" and declared that the country isn't violating the resolution.

"If the Security Council is serious about holding Iran accountable and enforcing our resolutions, then at a minimum we should be able to deliver a unanimous condemnation of this provocative missile test", Haley emphasized.

Iran's military did not confirm or deny it had tested a new missile, but said it will "continue to both develop and test missiles".

"The first two years of the Trump administration demonstrated that President Trump is not undermining these institutions, nor is he abandoning American leadership".

He said Tehran's ballistic missile tests and Hezbollah's tunnels are all connected.

"Under President Trump, we are not abandoning global leadership or our friends in the worldwide system", he said.

A 2015 United Nations resolution endorsing the Iran nuclear deal "calls on" Tehran not to engage in missile development, but it does not expressly forbid it.

United States urges Europe to impose sanctions on Iran over missiles

Pompeo warned that Iran's "missile testing and missile proliferation is growing", and called on the country to "cease immediately all activities related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons".

The senior spokesman of the Iranian Armed Forces also said on Sunday that the country would continue to test and develop its missiles in line with its deterrence policy despite adversarial positions taken on this issue by USA officials. "We will not ask any country's permission in this regard".

On Monday, Hook said Trump's campaign of "maximum pressure" on Tehran since withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal "can be effective if more nations can join us in those [sanctions]".

"It is a grave and escalating threat, and nations around the world, not just Europe, need to do everything they can to be targeting Iran's missile program", Hook said.

Hook said "progress" was being made on getting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to consider a proposal to target individuals and entities that play key roles in Iran's missile programme.

Several EU countries have denounced the recent USA sanctions, however, and continue to work to preserve the 2015 nuclear deal, even though they have also criticised Iranian positions on other matters. He is also due to meet the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Brussels.

The remaining five signatories to the nuclear deal - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - have backed an European Union effort to set up a special payment system in a bid to maintain trade and business ties with Iran.

"The goal of America and its regional allies is, through exerting pressure and economic shortages, to say we have hit a dead end on the threshold of the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution", said Zanganeh, as reported by Reuters, citing the oil ministry news agency SHANA.

Pompeo lamented that conventional wisdom had concluded that "the more treaties we sign, the safer we supposedly are" and "the more bureaucrats we have, the better the job gets done".
