Google is shutting down Allo, to no one’s surprise

As for Hangouts, the venerable chat app that launched with Google+, the company basically confirmed it would go away at some point last week, with users being "upgraded" to the Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet services now available for businesses.

For the last six years, after killing the GTalk, Google is trying to take on WhatsApp. Today, Google is confirming that in March 2019, Allo will no longer work.

Allo development, as slow as it was, has been on hold since Google announced they were re-focusing their messaging efforts on the Rich Communications Services (RCS) powered "Chat" platform in their Android Messages app back in April.

Allo is the latest in a series of cross-platform messaging apps from Google to compete with the likes of Whats App and Facebook Messenger and offered consumer-facing features like stickers and encryption. Messages, for now and for most people, is the default SMS app in many Android apps, and particularly so in Google's own Pixel phones. The features like Smart Reply, GIFs and desktop support from Allow has been moved to Messages and to continue the momentum and to focus on Messages services, Google is stopping Allo support.

"Given Messages' continued momentum, we've made a decision to stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages". If you want to save any of your Allo conversations, you can export them through these instructions. And after that it will be gone. The original rumor was that Google was going to terminate Hangouts Classic, but Google eventually chimed in to say that it would be bringing Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat to the general public, instead of keeping them exclusive to G Suite customers.

If you are using Allo, you need to find something new pretty quickly.

However, now it is not clear if all Hangouts users - and many of them are regular users who just have a Google account and aren't part of G Suite base - will get access to the Hangouts Chat and Meet or if it will be restricted to G Suite users.

Following the footsteps of a certain fruit-based competitor, Google is putting all their eggs in the Android Messages basket.

The announcement mostly reiterates what we already assumed was true - the company is focusing on Android Messages and Duo for consumers, and Hangouts Chat and Meet for businesses.
