Jake Gyllenhaal joins Instagram and announces he's in Spider-Man

Jake Gyllenhaal finally confirmed what was reported months ago: he's playing the villain Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home! But now at last, it seems we have confirmation, from the horse's (evil magician's) mouth.

Jake Gyllenhaal fans were in for a huge surprise on Wednesday.

Jake Gyllenhaal has joined Instagram and used the site to reveal that he is starring as a villain in the next Spider-Man film.

"And there is a sense of the scenes, with the casting in particular and also the storytelling, that you feel that you're actually in a movie with human beings in it".

In the comments section, his Spider-Man: Far From Home co-star Zendaya posted applause emoji while fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo wrote, "same" along with a sad face emoji.

In his first-ever Instagram post, the actor shared a video of himself reading a 1989 Amazing Spider-Man comic featuring Mysterio, and captioned it, "I just realized I'm not playing Spider-Man". It's now unclear which incarnation of Mysterio Gyllenhaal will be portraying.

Mysterio is a special effects expert who commits crimes and fights Spider-Man using elaborate illusions, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is due to be released on 5 July, 2019.
