Marine Planes Crash Off Japan Coast, Search and Rescue Underway

Japan aircraft crash

Reports on Twitter indicate that two US military aircraft have crashed during a midair refueling operation off Iwakuni, Japan. Search and rescue operations were underway at the scene.

The planes involved are a KC-130 and an F/A 18, carrying a total of seven personnel, United States media quoted officials as saying.

The Marines' statement also indicates that Japanese planes have joined in the search efforts.

A USA official told Fox News that seven Marines were on board the two aircraft. Very few details have been made public in the initial Corps news release.

A spokesman for Japan's Self-Defense Forces said that one of the airmen had been rescued but the immediate fate of the remaining crew members was unclear.

The planes "were conducting regularly scheduled training when the mishap occurred", the statement said.

In a statement, the Marine Corps said the planes had taken off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan. "There is no additional information available at this time".

This is a developing story; check back for more updates.
