North Korea expands long-range missile base as Trump seeks second summit

Kim Jong-un led the testing of a newly developed tactical weapon last month

The exclusive footage, obtained by CNN, offers evidence that the Yeongjeo-dong missile base and a nearby, previously unreported, site remain active and have been continually upgraded, highlighting the continuing gulf between Pyongyang and Washington's views on denuclearisation.

Trump said on Saturday he hoped to hold a second meeting with Kim early next year and U.S. national security adviser John Bolton said the lack of progress with North Korea made a second summit necessary, likely to be held in January or February.

President Trump, who met with Kim during a summit in Singapore in June, supports Kim traveling to South Korea and thinks it could pave the way for another summit after the first of the year.

In a statement the Pentagon said: "We watch North Korea very closely but we can not discuss intelligence".

The site's location makes it a strong candidate to receive North Korea's newest long-range missiles, including those that can carry nuclear weapons, according to Lewis and colleague David Schmerler, CNN reported.

But diplomacy has since come to a halt amid disputes over a USA demand that North Korea first produce a full inventory of its nuclear weapons and take other denuclearisation steps before winning significant outside rewards. "It never said it would", Vipin Narang, a politics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wrote on Twitter. It never said it would. He just doesn't care. Kim pretends to disarm and Trump pretends to believe him. "That'll get everyone to halftime". "They have not lived up to the commitments so far", he told The Wall Street Journal's annual CEO Council conference. His national security adviser, John Bolton, acknowledged the failure of the Singapore summit but said...

"That's why I think the president thinks that another summit is likely to be productive".

The State Department declined to comment to the news outlet.
