Petrol wars: Iran threatens to blockade Gulf oil exports over USA sanctions

In his latest warning over U.S. sanctions, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned the United States that if Tehran isn't able to export oil then they will act to stop any country in the Gulf from doing the same.

Rouhani has made similar threats in the months since President Donald Trump withdrew the USA from the 2015 nuclear deal and began restoring sanctions.

After its repeated threats of disrupting other countries' oil shipment through the Gulf, if Washington presses ahead with efforts to halt Iranian oil export, the USA administration responded on Tuesday to Iran, where it dismissed any possibility of disruption in the navigation movement and rejected Tehran's provocations in the region.

Washington has reimposed sanctions, including an oil embargo, since withdrawing from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers in May.

The US had initially vowed to reduce Iran's oil sales to "zero" under the bans, but it later backed down and granted waivers to nearly all of Tehran's major crude buyers.

Iran's president downplayed the economic impact of sanctions, accusing the media of exaggerating the country's problems. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz to export oil if the United States moves forward with tougher sanctions. "We will build an Iran, which is more powerful than ever before".

The United States and the Israeli regime can not stand the idea of a powerful and dignified Iran, and the Iranian nation will not bow to them, Rouhani highlighted, adding, "the United States failed in launching a coup in our country".

"No hyperinflation, no massive unemployment will threaten us".

Hook said "progress" was being made on getting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to consider a proposal to target individuals and entities that play key roles in Iran's missile development.

Tehran's foreign ministry said its missile arsenal did not break global law, despite the United States slapping more sanctions on Iran over the programme. "There is no Security Council resolution prohibiting the missile programme and missile tests by Iran", IRNA quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi as saying.

The carrier deployment, though previously scheduled, was announced after the USA condemned Iran's test firing a medium-range nuclear capable ballistic missile on Sunday.
