South Korean President says visit from North Korea's Kim 'a possibility'

South Korean President Moon Jae-in speaks during a media conference in Auckland New Zealand

News on the summit timeline comes despite the cancellation last month of planned talks between U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and DPRK counterpart Kim Yong Chol, as well as the retirement of CIA Korea Mission Center head Andrew Kim. -North Korea summit and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's visit to South Korea.

North Korea has sought security guarantees from the USA and relief from global sanctions.

South Korea's president said Tuesday no timeframe has been set for a historic visit to Seoul by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un despite both hoping it will take place this year.

"President Trump asked me to forward to [Kim] these messages; he has a very friendly view of Chairman Kim Jong Un and likes him". Moon made the comments to reporters on the final day of a visit to New Zealand.

"Whether it's this year or not isn't that important, what's important is that the North Korea leader's visit to South Korea will definitely accelerate the denuclearisation process in the Korean peninsula". "We can improve South and North Korean relations as well as attain permanent peace on the Korean peninsula and denuclearisation".

"I think it will be absolutely imperative in this next summit that we come away with a plan for identifying all of the weapons in question, identifying all the development sites, allowing for inspections of the sites and the plan for dismantling nuclear weapons", Pence said in an interview with NBC.

Trump signalled on Saturday he was likely to meet Kim again in January or February.

After Trump and Kim met in Singapore in June, negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang have stalled due to differences on the scale of denuclearization, USA sanctions, and whether to issue a war-ending declaration, among others.

His words suggest that he persuaded Mr Trump in talks in Buenos Aires that warmer relations between North and South Korea do not undermine the pressure being exerted on Mr Kim by worldwide sanctions.

Trade is also likely to feature, following New Zealand and South Korea signing a free trade agreement in 2015.

Moon's programme in Auckland includes a ceremony of welcome and a state lunch hosted by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy at Government House, a wreath laying ceremony and tour of Auckland War Memorial Museum, and an engagement with the Korean community in Auckland.
