Celebrities pay tribute to George H.W. Bush after former president's death

Former Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis attends the HBO Documentary Films premiere of''Addiction' at the Hammer Museum

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump on Saturday mourned the passing of former President George H.W. Bush, remembering him as a man of "sound judgment, common sense and unflappable leadership".

Perino, press secretary under President George W. Bush, said the biggest honor of her life is being able to say she knew the 41st president.

Trump did not attend the last major funeral in Washington, that of former Sen. "The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens". "May his memory be eternal".

President Trump, who is in Buenos Aires for a Group of 20 summit, had planned to hold a news conference to tout the accomplishments of the meeting, but postponed the conference until he returns to the States.

Trump also closed government offices Wednesday and designated it as a national day of mourning, which traditionally occurs on the same day as the Washington component of a late president's state funeral.

Bush, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, was 94. "While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude", said former President Obama.

Former President Jimmy Carter said the Republican's administration "was marked by grace, civility and social conscience". Through his Points of Light initiative and other projects, he espoused a uniquely American volunteer spirit, fostering bipartisan support for citizen service and inspiring millions to embrace community volunteerism as a cherished responsibility.

"Traveling overseas, I also came to appreciate the reputation Bush had built over many years", he wrote.

"The President noted it was humanity's destiny to explore, and America's destiny to lead". "And I'm not too excited about him being a leader". 'Thousand points of light?' I never got that one.

"President Bush's Space Exploration Initiative helped us to think big and long-term about space. And I think in an odd way, he made it look so easy that people don't appreciate how hard a task he had".
