Counter-Strike: Global Offensive adds battle royale mode, goes free-to-play

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive now has its own battle royale mode in the ever-growing genre, Danger Zone. Yes, you read that right!

In their official announcement, Valve states that the full CS:GO experience is now free to all players, including all game modes, maps, matchmaking, and select item drops. Well, you'll be awarded "Prime" status, which makes you "eligible to receive Prime-exclusive souvenir items, item drops, and weapon cases", according to the game's Steam page. For instance, Prime Status members are matched only with other players who have Prime Status.

Video game publisher Valve has announced major updates for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Just like standard Counter-Strike, you can then use that cash to purchase additional weapons.

News about a potential battle royale mode arriving in Counter-Strike: GO surfaced earlier this year, though the company didn't confirm the speculation. You'll do that via an upgradeable tablet, which can also give you intel on the shrinking zone, enemy positions, and opponent deliveries. Expect weapons to have the same properties as they do in the core game, with looting being a big focus of "Danger Zone". "Play solo, or work together as a squad of two or three!" You'll also be able to earn money by completing special mini-missions like contracts and hostage rescues. CS:GO does have its exclusively first-person perspective going for it, at least.

A hot potato: Battle royale is by far the most defining game mode of the year, and Valve is looking capture back some of the audience that Epic Games has taken away. Like CS:GO, the matches are short, lasting about 10 minutes.

The mode accommodates 16 players in singles, and 18 players in duos or triples. The development team mentions that Danger Zone is just getting started and will evolve in the future, taking into account community feedback and match data.
