Father of missing tourist Grace Millane speaks

Missing Brit backpacker Grace Millane

She had booked to stay at the Base Backpackers hostel in central Auckland until 8 December.

Her family became concerned when she did not respond to birthday messages on Sunday, New Zealand Herald reported. Prior to then she had been in contact daily.

At university she was vice-captain of the hockey team.

Her distraught father, David Millane, 60, a property developer from Essex, arrived in New Zealand early this morning and appeared at a press conference with police.

"Clearly this is a very stressful time for Grace's family and the longer she remains missing, the more our concern grows for her safety and wellbeing", said Detective Inspector Scott Beard, of Auckland City Police.

Michael said: "It was what she wanted - she wanted to see the world".

"It is a really hard situation for the family at the moment", he said.

Thousands of other posts have been shared on social media pleading for information about her, and people have been tweeting under the hash tag #helpfindgrace.

Police yesterday released a new photograph showing the last known sighting of Millane.

When she disappeared, she was wearing a black dress and white shoes. The tourist, from Wickford, near Basildon in Essex, was last spotted on Auckland's Victoria Street near the SkyCity entertainment complex on Saturday at around 7.15pm.

"Finally, I would just like to take this opportunity to appeal to anybody who has seen, spoken to, or come into contact with Grace over the last few days, to come forward with any detail, no matter how small, and contact the investigation team". Her family has not heard from her in days, including on her birthday, which lead them to raise the alarm on Monday.

They have not yet confirmed whether Grace left the City Life Hotel and this is part of the ongoing investigation, police say.

She was due to leave New Zealand in about two weeks, police said.

More than 25 Police staff are now working on the investigation into the disappearance.

Police would not comment on her bank account or cellphone activity.

The family has set up a Facebook page - Help Find Grace.

A missing person's report was officially filed on Wednesday according to Auckland City Police and there have been a number of unconfirmed sightings that have been reported. He said they had been in contact with the British High Commission in Wellington.

In response to questions, Beard said she could have more cellphones.
