Man died after coughing up lung after heart surgery

Man Dies After Coughing Up Lung's Bronchial Tree

The anti-coagulants the man was taking forced blood out of his pulmonary system and into his right lung.

This kind of clot isn't unheard of in patients, but what was unusual was how intact it was.

The patient had a violent coughing fit in hospital a week after surgery to fit him with a pacemaker in case his heart became blocked.

The unnamed patient was being treated at the intensive care unit at the University of California San Francisco Medical Centre, which was where reports say he started coughing violently.

The man was on blood thinning drugs to help prevent clots, the Atlantic noted, also pointing out that this treatment can make bleeding in some areas more common.

"After a ventricular assist device was placed and anticoagulation therapy initiated, haemoptysis developed, and he expectorated a cast of the right bronchial tree", the journal wrote.

After days of coughing up tiny blood clots, the man eventually - much to his relief - spat up a cast of his right lung's bronchial tree.

It was originally folded in on itself, and the treating doctor, Georg Wieselthaler and his team carefully unfolded it, and were shocked at what they saw.

"We were astonished", Wieselthaler said.

On Tuesday, the widely respected journal shared a truly incredible case: a 36-year-old man with aggressive end-stage heart failure had a coughing fit so extreme that he coughed up a six-inch wide blood clot.

The right bronchial tree consists of three segmental branches in the upper lobe (blue arrows), two segmental branches in the middle lobe (white arrows), and five segmental branches in the lower lobe (black arrows).

"It's a curiosity you can't imagine".

The man died from heart complications a week after coughing up the clot.
