Numbers for the BC government's climate change plan

B.C. climate plan proposes changes that will impact every part of the economy

The cost of the plan will be outlined in next year's budget, Horgan said, and officials said it will be fully funded. "By moving to clean, renewable energy - like our abundant supply of BC electricity - we can power our growing economy and make life better and more affordable for British Columbians".

"CleanBC is a B.C. -specific approach to making our communities strong and vibrant for decades to come as we rise to the challenge of global climate change", said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. "In addition to that, we'll be accountable for how we spend the carbon tax money; we'll be accountable in each ministry about what we're spending on programs to reduce emissions". Some of this can be accomplished by increasing the amount of renewable fuel that is blended with liquid fuels.

The government says new buildings will be 80 per cent more efficient by then compared with homes built now. The plan calls for 16,000 homes to be updated each year.

Other government announcements have already been made to retrofit buildings for energy savings.

"Our provincial government is finally getting serious about greenhouse gas reduction", Austin said.

Today's plan is wide ranging and includes measures to help industry, transportation and communities reduce emissions. The plan describes and quantifies measures that will eliminate 18.9 megatonnes of its 2030 target.

The switch to cleaner energy means increased biofuel consumption and a shift to hydro-generated electricity. "The single biggest thing that we can do is to electrify", he said.

Vernon said she's looking forward to seeing the complete plan beyond 75 per cent. Rather, the plan includes training for people to learn the construction and mechanical skills to work in the clean construction and zero emission vehicle fields. "Given that this plan continues to strive to meet our original dates and targets, the initiatives announced today are largely to be expected, and in the context of a climate-change plan, would be considered the more straightforward elements". "This is about sending a message to the worldwide community that going to rise to this challenge".

- The province set new targets for greenhouse gas emissions in May, committing to reductions of 40 per cent by 2030, 60 per cent by 2040 and 80 per cent by 2050.

This graph illustrates the predicted reductions in greenhouses gases in B.C. under the CleanBC plan. The material given to the media includes supporting quotes from federal and American politicians, Indigenous leaders including Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, and many representatives from business, labour and environmental groups.

The John Horgan government, along with the BC Green Party, have released their Climate Plan for the province going forward. Almost three-quarters of the energy used across the B.C. economy still comes from fossil fuels, and the Clean B.C. plan aims to change that.

Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green caucus and MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, added: "CleanBC will position our province for success as the world transitions to low-carbon solutions. British Columbia is changing".

"It's about actions for climate change to address this serious threat", Smith said.

But the minister said the CleanBC plan is not about scaring people into action - quite the opposite. "The recent United Nations report makes clear that we can not expand fossil fuels and ensure a safe climate".

The British Columbia government has released its plan to dramatically cut pollution as it builds a low-carbon economy.

Later, in an interview, Dan Woynillowicz, policy director for Clean Energy Canada, said he thinks British Columbians can have confidence in the plan, particularly because it is comprehensive and has clear goals and timelines.

"It's a problem for them", McCartney said.

The plan calls for more electrification of the economy, including the oil and gas sector. Meeting its legislated target would require a reduction of 25.5 megatonnes from 2007 levels, according to the report.
