Southwest Airlines flight skids off runway at Burbank airport

Southwest

"Initial reports indicate that Southwest airlines flight 278 from Oakland to Burbank came to a stop at the end of a runway upon arrival into Burbank".

The incident occurred on the same Burbank runway where 43 people were injured in March 2000 after a Southwest 737-300 overshot a runway.

At the time of the incident visibility at the airport reportedly dropped to one mile amid the heavy rain.

There are no reported injuries.

Passengers were seen evacuating from the aircraft via an inflatable slide shortly after.

The scene on the plane during landing was calm, according to passengers. "Mud was hitting the windows", passenger Grant Palmer told CBS Los Angeles. "They go over these E-MAS beds and the landing gear slowly sinks into these blocks of crushable concrete", Yakel said. "We must no longer be on the runway".

Clapping erupted on the plane after it came to a stop, passengers who were grateful to the pilot for his response said. Dallas-based Southwest said everyone safely got off the plane by the stairs.

Flights from other airlines were continuing to depart from Burbank.

The airport is open, and all airlines are operational, the airport tweeted.

At about 3:45 p.m., Southwest said it had resumed normal operations out for Burbank.

Over six hours, the area received 1.66 inches of rain.
