Tiger keen to be US playing captain

Tiger puts Bahamas over Aus Open

Both tournaments are a week before the Presidents Cup, but Woods told a media conference today that the Hero World Challenge would be his recommendation to the American team before the 12-15 December event in Melbourne.

Two of the biggest names in world sport, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are in Melbourne as captains of the USA and International Teams respectively for the 2019 Presidents Cup at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

"We have to figure out some logistical things between now and then and that's the reason I'm here", Woods said. "We've got a few meetings scheduled in today, try to get a better plan going forward, so that we can get the best that we can at the Hero as well as getting everyone here from the Bahamas to this tournament rested, get them prepared and get them ready to play".

The only time in the 24-year Presidents Cup history that the U.S. team has tasted defeat was at Royal Melbourne back in 1998. That's what we learned in '98, the guys weren't competitive, they had shut it down.

"We play as individuals in 51 weeks of the year, this is the one time we come together", he said.

Woods, who claimed his 80th career PGA Tour victory in September, is in Melbourne on a promotional trip for next year's competition.

But he made clear he wanted to play at an event he has been part of for 20 years.

"It's just so much fun, some of the best golf you can play in the entire world".

Merely 48 hours before the start of the Presidents Cup - and Woods said he needed to ensure they would still be fresh. He shares the record of 24 wins with Phil Mickelson and had a 2-3 record in 1998 and again in 2011 at Royal Melbourne.

Woods spent part of Wednesday running a junior clinic and paid a visit to Royal Melbourne which unsurprisingly, he found nearly exactly the same as it was when he most recently competed in Melbourne in 2011.

"After the TOUR Championship, we'll have our top eight guys, and hopefully I'll be part of the top eight. If not, myself and my vice-captains will have to figure out the next four guys who are best served to be part of this team".

Only Hale Irwin has played the Presidents Cup as a captain when he performed dual roles for the U.S.in the inaugural 1994 event.

Woods declared the decision would be one for him to mull over with his assistant captains and most importantly the eight automatically qualified players but he had no aversion to being part of that conversation should form warrant it. "Jim (Furyk) thought my role was better being focused on playing". It will feature a 12-man US team playing against a dozen worldwide counterparts, captained by Ernie Els.

"Normally over the course of time, a lot of golf courses get modernized, get lengthened, change different angles, add bunkers, whatever it may be, but they haven't done that at Royal [Melbourne]", Woods said.

"(Royal Melbourne) is one of the most unique courses you can play; it's so short, so fast and so tricky.
