Trump calls ex-secretary of state ‘dumb as a rock’

Tillerson, who was sacked in March, made no attempt to deny his poor relationship with Trump during a rare interview on Thursday night as part of a charity dinner in his native Texas. Tillerson went on to call Trump a "pretty undisciplined" man who "doesn't like to read" and "doesn't like to get into the details of ... things".

Tillerson also said Trump frequently asked him to do things that he had to explain were illegal or otherwise ill-advised.

When the president would say, 'Here's what I want to do, and here's how I want to do it.' And I'd have to say to him 'Mr.

While they often disagreed, Tillerson, who spent his whole career at "the disciplined, highly process-oriented" Exxon before retiring and becoming the top US diplomat, said he did not know how else to conduct himself with Trump except in "a really straightforward fashion".

Mr Tillerson served as US Secretary of State from February 1 2017 to March 31 2018.

On Thursday, Tillerson said that the way Americans consumed news concerned him, in an apparent reference to Twitter, the president's favored tool for foreign policy announcements.

When he selected him, Trump offered a vastly different assessment of Tillerson than on Friday, saying his "tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics" made him an "excellent choice".

"I will be honest with you, it troubles me that the American people seem to want to know so little about issues that they are satisfied with a 128 characters", Tillerson said, referring to Trump's use of Twitter.

"I'd say here's what we can do", Tillerson continued.

In March, Trump fired Tillerson and replaced him with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In leaving, Tillerson said Washington, D.C., can be a "very mean-spirited town".

"We can go back to Congress and get this law changed", Tillerson said he told Trump. "Now it is a whole new ballgame, great spirit at State!" His predecessor, Rex Tillerson, didn't have the mental capacity needed.

It's this back-and-forth that Tillerson thinks cost him his job.

He recently delivered a commencement speech in May at the Virginia Military Institute where he appeared to take a veiled shot at Trump, saying that when we "go wobbly on the truth. we go wobbly on America".
