Trump nominates ex-Fox News anchor Nauert as United Nations envoy

Nauert was then appointed acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs and was for a time the highest-ranking woman and fourth highest-ranking official in the building.

The 48-year-old native of IL is deemed by State Department colleagues as "hard-working" and "well in over her head at an understaffed agency", reports by USA Today and Wbir suggest.

Nauert covered domestic and worldwide stories as an ABC News correspondent from 2005 to 2007 prior to joining Fox.

"Heather Nauert will be nominated for the ambassador to the United Nations", Trump told reporters on his way to Marine One on Friday. She hadn't specialized in foreign policy or worldwide relations.

As a New York-based anchor and correspondent at the Fox News Channel, Nauert oversaw breaking news, anchored programs, covered global and domestic crises and interviewed senior elected and military officials.

But she has taken on a bolder role under Pompeo, assertively seeking to promote his message. Nauert has served as a spokesperson for the State Department since April 2017.

There have been other missteps, including the time when she cited D-Day - the Allied invasion of Normandy against the Nazis - as an example of America's strong relationship with Germany.

"She is obviously extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in the foreign policy of this administration and has answered questions and defended it in front of a number of different press inquiries", Schaefer said.

Nauert, says The Washington Post, has earned a reputation as a "stalwart defender" of the president even through the turbulent tenure of Trump's first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson.

Without elaborating on the topics, she added, "For the most part he's been very willing to listen and very willing to come around". And that's the point: Trump values how his messages and policy decisions are explained by his subordinates, and has said his instincts and intellect are better than most.

"I think that he will be confirmed readily by the Senate", Gingrich said.

On Nauert's nomination, Hirono said she would have "difficulty" supporting her due to her lack of experience. And the pick for the high-profile USA policy megaphone, seems more than justified, at least at first glance. "She'll be ambassador to the United Nations", Trump told reporters at the White House early Friday.

She does, however, have something in common with Bolton.

Her appointment to the United Nations role would have to be approved by the US Senate.
