Ukraine latest: USA plane swoops on Russian Federation in 'extraordinary flight'

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko leads the National Security and Defence Council meeting in Kiev Ukraine Sunday Nov. 25 2018

The treaty "promotes openness and transparency in military activities through reciprocal, unarmed observation flights", Pahon said.

The flight, requested by the Arms Control Directorate of the Ukrainian General Staff, is the latest USA response to Russia's military activity across the world.

This was the first "extraordinary" flight under the Open Skies Treaty since 2014, the Pentagon said.

Normally these flights are arranged well in advance.

The warning by Ukraine's Defense Ministry sets up another possible military confrontation in the area, where Russian seized three Ukrainian Navy ships and 24 crewmen on November 25.

Under the treaty, countries that do not have a coastline on the Black Sea must notify Turkey at least 15 days prior to transiting, according to CNN.

Ukraine's defense ministry warned Russian Federation on Friday that it will soon send navy ships through the Kerch Strait where Russian Federation fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels two weeks ago.

On Wednesday the US Navy sent its USS McCampbell, a guided missile destroyer, through the Sea of Japan, "in the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay", the Navy said. Officials wouldn't say which ship will make the passage in mid-December.

The Pentagon says a US Air Force plane flew a special observation flight over Ukraine in a show of solidarity after Ukraine's naval confrontation with Russian Federation.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak told reporters on Friday that his country intends to send naval ships through the Kerch Strait soon, saying that "otherwise Russian Federation will fully occupy the Sea of Azov".

The United States has begun making preparations to sail a warship into the Black Sea amid Russia-Ukraine tensions, CNN has reported. He said the flight was requested by the arms control directorate of the Ukrainian General Staff.

"A U.S. Air Force OC-135 observation plane flew over Ukraine today with U.S., Canadian, German, French, United Kingdom, Romanian and Ukrainian observers aboard", Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon told VOA. It flew from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Ramstein air base in Germany on November 30 and flew over Ukraine on Thursday, he said.
