Vernon Carey makes his selection between Duke, UNC and Michigan State

Coach K and Co. are also waiting on the decisions of two other top 10 recruits: center Isaiah Stewart (ranked No. 6), who has said he wouldn't mind playing alongside Carey Jr. and could announce his college choice at any time, as well as forward Matthew Hurt (ranked No. 7), who has scheduled an official visit to Duke for the weekend of January 19 but isn't expected to make up his mind until the spring.

The Blue Devils are no stranger to getting top recruits, landing at least one top five high school player each year since 2013.

The fact that Carey, a 6-foot-10 center, is ranked No. 2 in the Class of 2019 means Duke has now secured a commitment from a top-three prospect in each of the past seven years. However, it would leave the program in a precarious position as they open next year against Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic in Atlanta and also host Notre Dame in the nonconference slate in 2019. "His nimble footwork and soft touch is not talked about enough at his physically imposing size".

He's a decorated high school player and won a gold medal with USA Basketball over the summer. Over his last two games, the freshman put up 53 points in 53 minutes on 22-of-28 shooting, logging 23 rebounds, dishing 11 assists and grabbing four steals.

Carey is the son of former Miami Dolphins lineman Vernon Carey.

Carey chose the Blue Devils over Michigan State and North Carolina. He was drafted second overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2018 NBA Draft. Even though Tom Izzo from Michigan State doesn't recruit all the way down in Florida, Michigan State missed out on Carey by a thin margin according to his father.
